The 3M’s Perfect-It product line is a system developed by 3M to help consistently produce defect-free finishes in an efficient manner. Designed for marine, RV, and industrial gelcoat, this versatile group of products can do it all from start to finish. Organized through a simple step by step approach, there is no need to experiment or develop your own process, simply follow the instructions for a stunning finish that enhances your gelcoat’s beauty and also protects it from the elements.
The Perfect-It finishing system follows a simple workflow. Prewash, cut, polish, and then finish off with wax to seal and protect the newly rejuvenated finish. Recognizing that not every instance calls for this exact pattern, 3M created products that allow users to both skip unnecessary steps and combine others for maximum efficiency.
Product Options
- 3M Perfect-It Boat Wash (Prewash) – can be used for general cleaning, or as the first step in the Perfect-It finishing system. Formulated to produce a large amount of suds to remove common marine debris without stripping wax from the surface. Safe to be used on virtually all areas of boats from bow to stern, including hull and non-skid areas.
- 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Light Cutting Polish and Wax (Polish and Wax) - works exceptionally well to remove light to medium oxidation, swirl marks, and scratches of P1500 or finer, even on difficult dark colored gelcoats. This formula can be used to cut, polish, and wax all in one step, saving both time and money. Provides a long wet-time which makes it easy to work with and store. Leaves behind a smooth high-gloss finish every time.
- 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Medium Cutting Compound and Wax (Cut and Wax) - is ideal for removing oxidation, weathering, dulling, chalking, and scratches of P1000 or finer and applying a durable protective shell on the surface in one step. The high gloss finish left behind after use not only brings out the vibrance and nuances of your gelcoat, but also works to protect it from weather and use.
- 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Heavy Cutting Compound (Cut) - is 3M’s fastest-cutting gelcoat formula for removing heavy oxidation, weathering, dulling, chalking, and P800 or finer scratches. Use after washing to achieve a glossy finish that does not need to be polished before waxing, even on darker colored paints. This product has a long wet-time, which makes it easy to work with and easy to store.
- 3M Perfect-It Boat Wax (Wax) - is an excellent final step for any process where a wax finish is recommended/required. Formulated with a blend of pure carnauba wax, silicones, polymers, and resins, this wax brings out a vibrant gloss that also provides durability against the elements and is safe for use on gelcoat, paint, fiberglass, and metals. The liquid wax is easy to apply and clean up, and is suitable in many different climates.

hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.
1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
Examples: 1/16 inch = 62.5 mils; 1/32 inch = 31.25 mils
Lower gauge gloves are heavier - have thicker construction, fewer stiches knitted per inch and offer less dexterity.
Higher gauge gloves are lighter - have thinner/finer construction, more stitches knitted per inch and offer more dexterity.
Gloves offered typically runs from 7 to 18 (12 and 13 are in the middle of the scale).
