Product Description

3M Scotch 4298 Adhesion Promoter is formulated specifically for use with 3M VHB acrylic foam tapes to achieve a permanent bond with low surface energy plastics used for automotive dashboards, interior trim, and exterior trim applications. It works well with LSE plastics, as well as TPO, PPO, PP, PC, PC and ABS. 3M Adhesive Promoter is supplied in an easy-to-use sponge applicator packet, for a fast and precise application. Convenient to use, it dries within 30 to 90 seconds. Each sponge applicator packet contains .85 ounces (2.5 cc) of adhesion promoter, enough to cover up to 150 square inches. Since formulations and surface energies can vary for these types of materials, each application should be verified through testing.

Product Applications

  • Automotive instrument panel and interior trim
  • Injection-molded side body side moldings
  • Automotive claddings
  • For use with 3M™ Acrylic Foam Tapes and 3M™ Acrylic Plus Tapes
Made in the U.S.

Application Instructions

The liquid contents of the packet should be completely used as soon as possible after opening. Hold packet upright and avoid squeezing an opened packet to prevent spillage of liquid contents. The packet can be opened by tearing across the top of the packet at the notches. This will expose the sponge applicator. Do not remove the sponge or squeeze a freshly opened packet. Handling the bottom section of the packet should enable application of 3M adhesion promoter 4298 with no mess. Apply a thin, uniform coating to the bonding surface, using the minimum amount that will fully coat the surface. A wet coating thickness of 0.002 inches or less is recommended. Apply promoter only to areas that will be fully covered with tape. Although drying times may vary due to temperature and/or humidity, a drying time of 30 to 90 seconds is typically indicative of this thickness. The primer should be dry before applying tape. For best results, apply tape immediately after primer application or no more than one hour afterward. Be sure the primed surface remains free from contaminants prior to tape application.
* Multiple cases may be shipped per package in order to minimize the charge for shipping.

QUESTION: When using 4298 promoter do you have to clean surface with alcohol first I am applying a carbon fiber part on car bumper
ANSWER: The adhesion promoter won’t clean a substrate so for the absolute best bond cleaning first with alcohol would be recommended. Thank you.

QUESTION: After applying the adhesive promoter, how long should I wait to install a spoiler to my car?
ANSWER: As soon as possible. Because it is a promoter apply your tape as soon as you apply to the area, then complete your installation.

3M Scotch 4298 Adhesion Promoter [Sponge Applicator Packet]
This stuff gets the job done and that's all there is to it. If there is something your VHB will not stick to, this will make it work.

Just what I was looking for
3M Scotch 4298 Adhesion Promoter [Sponge Applicator Packet]
If VHB isn't strong enough for you, this may change that. I use VHB for several things around the studio and it just doesn't cut it for the one application, this however changed that and now I have a much stronger bond and won't waste as much material.

Made in the USA
hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.
