Product Description

3M ScotchBlue Original Painter's Tape is a medium adhesion tape ideal for paint masking on multiple surfaces including painted walls and trim, woodwork, glass, and metal. It can be removed cleanly without adhesive transfer or surface damage for up to 14 days, even in direct sunlight. 3M Scotch-Blue should NOT be used wallpapers, unpainted wallboard, wood floors, or poorly bonded surfaces. Options include tape in 60-yard rolls plus a die-cut version for corners and hinges.

3M 2090 Benefits:

  • Adhesive sticks easily to the surface and stays intact upon removal which reduces labor and rework.
  • Adhesive is light and UV stable.
  • Adhesive has minimal adhesion buildup over time which helps produce high-quality results.
  • Crepe paper backing is conformable and offers consistent surface contact for a secure hold.
  • The tape's backing is strong so it removes from a surface without tearing, but is still easy to tear.
  • The backing saturant is solvent and moisture resistant so it resists paint bleed-through and the adhesive doesn't transfer when the tape is wet.
Made in the U.S.
* Multiple cases may be shipped per package in order to minimize the charge for shipping.

Nominal Tape Widths vs Actual Widths

Nominal vs. Actual Widths Zoom In

Tape rolls are cut to standard tape industry metric widths of approx. 24mm per 1-inch of nominal width ordered. As a result ACTUAL tape widths are normally 5% narrower than the NOMINAL width shown in inches. Examples:

  • 1" Nominal width = 15/16" (24mm) Actual width
  • 2" Nominal width = 1-7/8" (48mm) Actual width
  • 3" Nominal width = 2-13/16" (72mm) Actual width

Note that tape rolls are NOT guaranteed to be splice-free.

QUESTION: I would like to use this tape to hold a print in place inside a frame. Would this tape cause any damage to the print over time? If this would not be a good product to use can you recommend another 3M product?
ANSWER: In order to not yellow a print over time would want to look for an archival type product. 3M 3051 is a very low tack paper tape, but its adhesion is closer to that of a post-it note so not sure would be enough to hold a print in place. Shurtape JLAR is another archival-type tape with higher, more permanent adhesion.

QUESTION: is this tape double sided.. meaning does it stick on both sides or just one?
ANSWER: This is a single-sided tape. For a double-sided tape where one side is painters tape can see Nashua CleanDrape.

QUESTION: Hello, could I use this type to mask off rubber door seals and trim on a car while polishing?
ANSWER: I wouldn't recommend using this tape for that application. Whilst it should adhere to the rubber and trim without issue, it may not stay flush on the rubber and potential leakage from the polish may occur. It's intended use is for paint, so the actual movement of polishing along with the polish itself may remove the tape as it is low-tac, negating it's intended use.

QUESTION: Is this used to help remove the product and scaffolding on 3D printing table? I'm not sure of its use when 3D printing?
ANSWER: This tape is used on the build plate to put a layer between the model and acrylic on the Replicator 2. I am also started using this tape on the Replicator 2X using ABS and it works well. It doesn't help remove the product persay but it does make it easier to get off than printing directly on the acrylic.

Scotch 3M Tape
3M Scotch 2090 ScotchBlue Original Painter's Tape
Been looking all over for this type. Found it!
3M Scotch 2090 ScotchBlue Original Painter's Tape
Made in the USA
hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.
1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
Examples: 1/16 inch = 62.5 mils; 1/32 inch = 31.25 mils
