Product Description

DAP Wall & Cavity Spray Foam is a one-component polyurethane foam in a 20 oz. aerosol can with a patent-pending widespray applicator. The applicator produces a broad fan pattern similar to a two-component rig, but without the tanks, hose or mixing setup, so it suits smaller cavity fills, rim joists and touch-up work where hauling a canister kit is not worth the effort.

The cured foam is closed cell at greater than 80% per ASTM D6226, delivers an aged R-value of 4.1 at 1 inch per ASTM C518, and meets Class A surface burning requirements with a 10 flame spread and 450 smoke developed at 2.75 inches per ASTM E84. Air permeance is under 0.004 CFM per square foot at 1 inch. One can yields up to 11 theoretical board feet.

Read This Before You Buy

This product is far more sensitive to prep than a standard gap-filler straw foam, and most reported failures trace back to three things. First, the can must be conditioned at 70 to 85°F for a full 24 hours before use. A can pulled from a cold truck or garage will not blend properly and will spray narrow or spit. Second, it must be held upside down while spraying. Held upright or sideways, the propellant discharges ahead of the foam and the can will appear to run empty early. Third, DAP notes that aged stock thickens and will not fan out correctly, so buy close to when you plan to use it and check the production code if performance seems off.

Ambient and substrate temperature should be 40 to 120°F with relative humidity at 40% or higher. Do not exceed a 1/2 inch layer of wet foam per pass. Overfilling is the most common cause of foam slumping off a vertical surface overnight.

Cure Schedule

  • Tack free: 7 to 12 minutes
  • Trimmable: 45 minutes
  • Fully cured: typically 24 hours, longer in thick applications, cold temperatures or low humidity

The applicator is reusable for the life of the can if flushed with acetone or DAP Foam Cleaner immediately after use. Shelf life is 12 months. Store upright at 70 to 85°F. Urethane foam use may be restricted in some jurisdictions, so confirm local code compliance before application. Country of Origin: United States.

Instructions

  1. Read all directions and cautions before use. Wear gloves, eye protection and work clothes, and protect the area with drop cloths.
  2. Condition the can at 70 to 85°F (21 to 29°C) for at least 24 hours before use.
  3. Make sure the application surface is clean, dry and free of foreign material. Surface and ambient temperature should be 40 to 120°F with relative humidity of 40% or higher.
  4. Shake the can vigorously for 30 seconds.
  5. Hold the can upright and attach the applicator, turning at the base of the stem rather than the nozzle. Do not overtighten.
  6. Test spray onto scrap cardboard or into a trash bin before spraying the project.
  7. Rotate the applicator tip to horizontal for horizontal spraying or to vertical for vertical spraying.
  8. Hold the can upside down and spray rapidly and continuously from about 12" away, applying no more than a 1/2" layer of wet foam. Foam expands up to 3x, so a 1/2" wet layer cures to roughly 1.5".
  9. One layer is sufficient for air sealing and thermal insulation, such as a rim joist.
  10. For a full cavity fill, wait at least 15 minutes after the first layer for initial cure and expansion, then apply a second layer once the surface is tack free. Do not overfill. Other cavities can be sprayed while waiting.
  11. As a faster alternative for multiple layers, mist the surface with water, apply a 1/2" layer of wet foam, mist the wet foam with water, then wait 5 to 7 minutes before the next layer.
  12. Allow 7 to 12 minutes for a tack free surface, 45 minutes before trimming edges, and about 24 hours for full cure. Cure time increases with thicker applications, colder temperatures and low humidity. Trim excess cured foam as needed.
  13. For uncured foam, unscrew the applicator and clean the applicator and valve thoroughly with DAP® Foam Cleaner or acetone. Cured foam must be removed mechanically.
  14. If wet foam contacts skin, wipe immediately with a dry rag and do not use water, since water accelerates curing. If foam dries on skin, apply petroleum jelly, cover with plastic gloves for 1 hour, then firmly wipe off residue with a clean cloth and repeat if needed. Wash with warm, soapy water. Do not use acetone or other solvents on skin. Remove contaminated clothing.

QUESTION: How many sq. Ft. Per can?
ANSWER: DAP only publishes yield in board feet, not square feet, so the sq. ft. number depends entirely on how thick you spray. One can is rated at up to 11 theoretical board feet, and a board foot is a 12" x 12" square at 1" thick. So the conversion is just 11 divided by your thickness in inches.

hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.

The cut level indicates how many grams of cutting load a glove can withstand from a sharp blade before being penetrated.
Lower gauge gloves are heavier - have thicker construction, fewer stiches knitted per inch and offer less dexterity.
Higher gauge gloves are lighter - have thinner/finer construction, more stitches knitted per inch and offer more dexterity.
Gloves offered typically runs from 7 to 18 (12 and 13 are in the middle of the scale).
