Product Description

Formerly referred to as helicopter blade/leading edge wing tape, ISC Helicopter-OG Surface Guard Tape is an extremely durable and conformable polyurethane tape. It has an 8-mil thick polyurethane backing which is highly effective at protecting paint from abrasion, erosion, tearing and punctures. This high-performance tape also protects against temperature extremes, UV light and automotive solvents. It will not yellow with age. The clear (transparent) polyurethane tape stands up to abuse, and is supplied on a white paper release liner.

Application Instructions

  1. PREP: For best results, apply at temperatures between 50F to 80F. The surface must be clean and free of dirt and/or wax prior to application. Use Sharp scissors to cut Surface Guard to size before removing the liner. Experiment with a small piece first.
  2. APPLY: Remove the paper liner slowly as Surface Guard is applied. Squeegee into position very slowly. The more you take your time, the better.
  3. PLEASE READ: Since a wide variety of surfaces exist, no guarantee is expressed or implied as to removability or damage to the surface.

QUESTION: i want to use this tape for protecting a bicycle frame. i see this tape is available in either 8 or 14 mil and have the following questions (i dont know if the answers to these questions would be different depending on the thickness): 1. how easy would it be to remove from a bike frame and will removing it leave any residue that may be difficult to clean off the bike frame? 2. is this available in any colors or is there a similar tape (functionally with easy removal properties) that would be available in a matte black? thanks for the help.
ANSWER: The tape from ISC is only available in clear. It is designed for permanent adhesion, but typically can be removed fine from most frames (always best to test first on an inconspicuous part of the frame to make sure removes as desired though). To get off any adhesive residue left please see:

QUESTION: How thick is the mil on this 2in x 12 feet?

QUESTION: How do you apply the tape?
ANSWER: I like to mix a tiny amount of liquid soap to a good amount of water in put it into a spray bottle. Clean your surface where the tape will be applied, then spray with the soap mixture. Apply the tape and press out the bubbles and let it dry. It takes a couple of hours. If there are still bubbles once the tape has set, just poke it with a safety pin.

QUESTION: Is this applied with water or is it self adhesive?
ANSWER: The tape is coated with a pressure- sensitive adhesive (it is not water activated).

QUESTION: Can this tape yellow or cloud over time?
ANSWER: ISC includes "Won't yellow over time" in their description for the 14 mil thick HELICOPTER-OG-HD product, but doesn't look like that is stated for this 8 mil thick HELICOPTER-OG product.

Perfect for my bicycle
ISC Helicopter-OG Surface Guard Tape [8 mil Outdoor Grade]
I used the tape to protect parts of the frame of my carbon fiber bicycle. It was easy to apply and work with. It is perfectly clear and therefore fairly unnoticeable but appears pretty strong. I’m very happy with how it came out.

Works great. Angles can be a challenge due to thickness . Either go with small sections or relief cuts. Usually the next day tape will lift if it can’t make the turn. Heat or cut

hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.
1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
Examples: 1/16 inch = 62.5 mils; 1/32 inch = 31.25 mils
The cut level indicates how many grams of cutting load a glove can withstand from a sharp blade before being penetrated.
Lower gauge gloves are heavier - have thicker construction, fewer stiches knitted per inch and offer less dexterity.
Higher gauge gloves are lighter - have thinner/finer construction, more stitches knitted per inch and offer more dexterity.
Gloves offered typically runs from 7 to 18 (12 and 13 are in the middle of the scale).
